Risoli’s is an inviting bidonville, a shantytown that encourages us not to stop at appearances (the hardness and roughness of an old metal bin) but to go beyond, ‘inside’, to find unusual, disorienting, emotionally charged situations. This particular shantytown can teach us – like a Genet novel – that every human reality, even the humblest, most marginal and at first sight annoying, can hide its own special beauty and “richness”.
Seven bidonidipetrolio (oil barrels) – seven, like the well-known “sisters” (The seven petrol sisters is an expression minted by the italian Enrico Mattei in 1940, n.d.r.) who produce black gold, as well as the resulting opulence and human suffering. The bins were degreased, their inside cleaned, and openings were made on their sides with an electric circular saw, then they were “filled” with miniatured reconstructions of a series of settings (the interiors): they are all different, and all are partially (magically) lit. Completing the display are large-size photo prints highlighting details of the bins’ interiors.
Vittorio Falletti – I’m Berlin
[…] She is motivated by an ethical urgency to draw attention on real shantytowns where, as the Onu-Habitat UN agency predicts, around two and a half billion people will live in 2030. Paola Risoli’s concern for the burning issues of today, as well as her assemblage technique using salvaged materials, creates an ideal link
between her work and that of American artist Edward Kienholz.
[…] But what is really unique is the “cinematic” style that informs Paola Risoli’s narrative (she has a degree in film history and critic, and is a cinephile). Her installations are ‘mental photo frames’ or, even better, film stills, unforgettable moments of an auteur movie where the setting is so accurately built and lit that it looks real; where a lit lamp or a pot on a stove are enough to evoke a presence and make us part of a story.
